Lights Lit for Show (Euljiro 3-ga - Euljiro 5-ga)
2014
4 fluorescent lightboxes printed and mounted in the style of vernacular street advertisements in Seoul, South Korea. The allusion to this provisional form of advertising is deployed in order to represent images of yet another form of street advertising; sculptural lighting displays that are used in the Euljiro neighborhood of Seoul by vendors wishing to demonstrate the variety of bulbs, tubes and LEDs for sale in their stores. The fluorescent lightboxes advertise this other form of advertising, while also underscoring the sculptural sensibilities of the vendors who have made such display units.
This series of lightboxes materialize one aspect of the accompanying video “Now the eye never sleeps”, which was commissioned by the Seoul Museum of Art for the exhibition “Universal Studios”, curated by Ara Cho.
