Shot in the Euljiro district of Seoul, this work borrows from documentary methodologies and voice-over narration to present a split subject historical account of the modernization of Korea, through the Edison Company’s early engineering of electric light at Gyeongbukgung Palace at the behest of King Gojong, to the present-day distribution of consumer and wholesale lightbulbs, fixtures, lamps and displays of the various types of domestic and industrial lighting. While it focuses on the specific example of Korea, this work proposes a broader meditation on the circulation of power in relation to both labor and metaphorical and literal illumination.
